Life Update...In Pictures

Well, basically I haven't had time to blog the past four months :) Here is a little update on our frolicking here in Cali from my iphone...

I have a new job at One Kings Lane! Yes my coworker was kind enough to take this for me so I could send it to my mom:

We work with women...

Most of my time has been spent working, flea marketing, and photo shooting:

My trusty shopping companion

Present to myself - Long Beach Flea Market

Rose Bowl expensiveness...$420

Cloisonne vase I fell in love with

Framed vintage Vera Neumann scarf

Photo shooting

We did find time to go to...(shout out to our parents for my birthday gift...we loved it!)

DISNEYLAND!!

Cups, duh.

Was a lot more intimidating watching than the ride was scary

"Napa Valley"

We got to go two times in a row because of a malfunction. Wooohoo!

all in all.... a LOT smaller than Disney World, and I think that is what was great about it.

Went to the wedding of a wonderful friend in home sweet home Austin...

Added some zhush to our teeny apartment a la cowhide zebra rug ....

Had some great friends over for Easter and made some delish food...

Katie, Carey, and me
The spread

My first homemade chicken pot pie - not the prettiest

And we have gotten to spend a little bit of time enjoying the warmer weather...

Volleyball - I don't participate

Pretty typical sunset...

And last, but not least, I finished up an e-design project for some friends

The beginning stages...

I had plans to blog about each one of these activities individually, but here they are thrown together for your viewing pleasure. Overall it has been a little hectic, but we are hanging in there and having fun. We are especially grateful for some new friends as of late, and I will be spending as much time as humanely possible at the beach on the weekends. PEACE.

Fraves

Curtains: Before & After

Hellooo blogging world. I am returning with my latest apartment project: our living room. It will be a continuous project over the next few months, but this week I was able to knock out step 1. Here is a little preview:
For some reason California owners have an OBSESSION with vertical blinds. You are very hard pressed to find a rental that does not sport these on at least one window, and we are so blessed as to have them sprawl across our entire living room. While I really cannot stand them, the thought of removing them, paying for enough fabric to span the wall, and then possibly returning them to the window at the end of our lease makes removing them impractical to me. In an effort to soften our white walls and distract the eye from the hideousness that is all things vertical blinds, I crafted the plan to hang two static panels on either side of the window in an effort to save money and time.  After spending a good amount of time one day looking through fabrics at my favorite, fabric.com, I found something! It actually wasn't my first choice (which was a blue and white ikat), but I still really like it. I thought it played on all of the woods, greens, and gold we have going on with our existing stuff and gives off a swedish cottage feel.

Here is our living room before the panels. Yes, I am aware that we have far too much furniture for this small space, but it is what we need right now and works well for us. I plan on swapping out that side table in between the two chairs for a small round one, changing out the lamp, adding ivory velvet throw pillows to the iron chairs and couch, possibly taking down that large painting and putting up another bookshelf, refinishing the coffee table (high gloss navy?) and finally swapping out the rug for a more transitional zebra cow hide. Ideally I would probably get rid of the two chairs and side table all together and just have one comfy chair as a reading nook, but it's just not a priority right now financially when there are plane tickets to be bought, places to see, and weddings to attend. Feel free to chime in if you have any other thoughts or suggestions on aforementioned plan.

Before: Right side of the living room

Before: Left side of the living room

And HERE is the fabric I chose! Coincidentally, I think if styled correctly this fabric would look great in a girl's nursery. Just saying.

Now I knew two things were non-negotiable. I wanted the curtains to hang from floor to ceiling, and I wouldn't be using a curtain rod (because I would likely have to have one custom made - plus I already had the materials on hand that I needed to hang them from clips). This meant I would need to order 6 yards of fabric because I didn't want to hang the fabric with the print going horizontally. If I hung the fabric with the design horizontal, I would have only needed to order 4 yards because the fabric comes in 54'' width...make sense? No? Doesn't matter. I devised a plan to hang the curtains from hooks in the ceiling and curtain clips like so:

I know it's not ideal, but this is my first time to make floor to ceiling curtains. Maybe one day I will be able to weight, line, hem, yada yada and make them look professional. One step at a time!

Cozies us up a little eh? I still need to hem the things on all edges, but honestly they will probably hang like that for a whiiiiile. What do y'all think? Can I get away with hanging strips of fabric from the ceiling and calling them curtains? :)

Heaven In Your Mouth

Oh. Wow. My apologies for the terrible picture, but this appetizer called for an immediate post. Another disclaimer, I wasn't too worried about presentation when I slapped all of the ingredients together in approximately 30 seconds.

Trader Joes rosemary raisin crisps, brie, and fig butter.

I sampled a similar version of this in Whole Foods, and I knew I could recreate using cheaper options at Trader Joes. It is extremely delicious, and pretty easy on the eyes with the whole fig coloring situation. If you are throwing or attending a holiday shindig, this would be a great addition to the menu because it is SO easy, yet still sophisticated - had to share this new find with you (well, new to me :) - I'm no foodie). Enjoy!

Thanksgiving Eve

Well it's our first Thanksgiving away from Austin, but we were fortunate enough to be there two weekends ago for one of my best friends from high school's (is that punctuated right?) wedding and it was phenom - pictures below for your enjoyment. A couple of my married friends at the wedding and I thought the bride looked so beautiful that it made them want a re-do (heeey La!). See for yourself. Loved getting to be apart of that Kailey :) I also got to see the Laguarta's before I flew out which was much appreciated and needed - love you Merrill!!

Tonight I am listening to Christmas tunes, drinking a glass of vino, and getting some cleaning done so I can do fun things tomorrow. We're planning on sleeping in, having homemade brunch that involves pumpkin pancakes, spending some time outside, and possibly eating some Thanksgiving grub somewhere cool in WeHo. We're very grateful to have family and friends we love so much back home, but we are also grateful for this season of life in Cali. We have made some great friends and gotten to do a lot - tomorrow we will enjoy a time of rest and thanking the Lord for His abundant grace and blessings of love and relationships...aaand maybe getting a little fatter.
